Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay lived with her Aunt Denise She encouraged DuVernay to develop her creativity and was instilled by the arts. She worked as a night nurse to allow her mother the time she needed during the day to indulge in writing, theatre and literature. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and raised. DuVernay's father remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama were later the inspiration to write a script for a movie that focused on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she obtained degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to investigate the waste at the home by a member jury. The jury member was unhappy with her journalism duties, and decided to change to the field of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in small production studios right after college. In 1999, she launched her own private company for public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency.
